The most beautiful libraries in the world

Although the object of reading is to travel to other worlds using our imagination, doing it in a particularly impressive space is another way for us to get inspired. Libraries can be more than buildings for books.

Here we have 10 of the most beautiful libraries around the world. Each one special for its architecture, its archive, history or sheer majesty.

George Peadbody Library, USA.

It is one of the most iconic buildings in Baltimore, it’s known for its dramatic neo Greco-style atrium, as well as its five stories of steel balconies. It was built in 1878.

Libreria Vasconcelos, Mexico.

It is known as the Mexican “mega library” and that’s not an exaggeration. This monster of a library makes the whale skeleton hanging above its main hall look small. More than half a million books are kept in its glass shelves which hang in each of its 5 stories.

Trinity College Library, Ireland.

This is Ireland’s biggest library. Every new book in the country must be sent here in order to get copyright. It is located in Dublin, the country’s capital.

Bibliotheque Nationale, France

Originally finished in 1868, it’s the French national library located in Paris. By 1896 it was already the largest literary repository in the world although it has since then lost that record.

Real Biblioteca del Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, España

The only space in this list declared a World Heritage by UNESCO. It is the historic residence of the King of Spain and contains over 40 thousand books. Its vault roofs are painted with frescos that represent the 7 liberal arts.

Stuttgart City Library, Germany

One of the more modern in the world. The library south of the country fools everyone who looks at it on the outside. With a cubic and austere exterior design, you would not expect such a brilliant space inside.

Bibliotheque Sainte Genevieve, France

This is the library of the University of La Sorbonne. That school is one of the most important in France and in the world. Its inside is the inspiration for the public library in Boston, Massachusetts.

Strahov Library, Czech Republic

Not only beautiful, but interesting too. This library has two secret passages that are opened with false books. More than 200 thousand books live inside of its walls. Practically every important title published in Europe before the 18th century is included.

Beinecke Rare Book Library, USA

Even though it doesn’t look like much, the inside of this Yale library is really impressive. It is the biggest space exclusively designed to protect rare books and manuscripts. It also houses 48 copies of the Gutenberg bible.

Stift Admont – Bibliothek, Austria

Built under the precept of the Illustration: just like our minds, our spaces must also be filled with light. It was designed in 1764 and it was built by Austrian master Josef Hueber. Those observant will say that this may have inspired Bella’s library in the Disney classic.
